Two representatives of Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s aircrew have been shortlisted for national awards that celebrate the specialist lifesaving skills, experience, contributions, and commitment of those that work tirelessly within the air ambulance community.
The Air Ambulances UK 2022 Awards of Excellence takes place on Monday 14th November at Birmingham’s Edgbaston Stadium and will be hosted by former British sprinter, Derek Redmond and leading Sky Sports broadcaster, Hayley McQueen.
This year, recently retired Captain Matthew Wood from Staffordshire, former pilot for Babcock Mission Critical Services working for the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity team, has been nominated for the Pilot of the Year Award which is presented to an air ambulance pilot who has demonstrated outstanding airmanship and excellent professional standards during air ambulance missions.
In addition, critical care paramedic, Fay Pollock also from Staffordshire, has been shortlisted as Critical Care Practitioner of the Year, awarded to someone who has demonstrated excellent clinical standards in delivering the best possible quality of care to patients.
Hanna Sebright, chief executive at Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said: "Captain Wood has worked for us for 18 years, the last decade of which he was based at our Tatenhill airbase in Staffordshire. He undertook more than 2,300 vitally important air ambulance missions during that time. While he has recently retired, he'll always be part of the Midlands Air Ambulance team.
"Fay has been part of the charity’s advanced critical care team for the last ten years. Her commitment to Learning Independently from Excellence (LIFE) has seen her become a champion of positive learning leading to the sharing of important knowledge that has positively influenced our pre-hospital practice.
"We could not be prouder of Captain Wood and Fay for making the shortlist in the Air Ambulances UK Awards of Excellence. They are already winners in our eyes however, we're excited to formally celebrate their achievements in a few weeks' time when the official presentation takes place in the heart of our operational patch."
