Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s Call For Support Through Payroll Giving

Friday 28th March 2025

With a national decline in Payroll Giving[1] Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is encouraging individuals and businesses to consider this tax efficient method as a way to support its vital lifesaving services.

Payroll Giving allows employees to donate directly from their salaries, offering a simple, tax-efficient way for people to contribute to the charity’s lifesaving work. Donations are made before tax is deducted, meaning an employee’s money will go even further. For example, if a basic-rate taxpayer sets up a £5 monthly salary donation, it will only cost them £4 a month. The difference comes from the tax that would have been paid to HMRC, meaning their money goes further in helping fund future missions in the Midlands.

Whilst Midlands Air Ambulance Charity has seen donations through Payroll Giving remain consistent over the past two years, recent research from the Charities Aid Foundation has shown that, in general, donations through the scheme are declining and the number of employees using the scheme has fallen by 13 per cent since 2020.

Even more concerning, the research showed that 59 per cent of people don't know about Payroll Giving at all, pointing to a major opportunity to raise awareness and get more people involved in this simple way of supporting charities.

For businesses, Payroll Giving provides an excellent opportunity to engage staff in charitable activities and make a tangible difference in their community. Employers also benefit from contributing to an important cause, enhancing their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)  and demonstrating their commitment to supporting local communities.

Pam Hodgetts, corporate partnerships manager for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said: “Participating in our Payroll Giving scheme provides an easy and meaningful way for business and employees to support our service. Even just £1 per week will make a real difference to our service as we do not receive Government funding for our daily missions. Last year, businesses funded two air ambulance missions and three critical care car missions through Payroll Giving.”
