Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is offering a practical first aid course specifically designed for motorcyclists, called 'First Biker on Scene'.

Bikers often share a strong sense of community through their love of riding, but with that comes the inherent risks of the road. On average, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity sadly responds to a critically injured motorcyclist every four days on average. Being prepared for emergencies is essential, and this course equips participants with the vital knowledge and skills to assist fellow riders when it matters most.

Created and delivered by experts in pre-hospital care, who are experienced bikers themselves, the First Biker on Scene course offers valuable real-world insights and hands-on training. Held at the charity’s airbase and headquarters in Shifnal, Shropshire, the three-hour course costs £55 and is open to bikers of all ages and experience levels, as well as anyone who may be present at the scene of a motorcycle accident. Participants will receive practical instruction in essential lifesaving techniques, including casualty scene management, under the guidance of experienced professionals through simulated scenarios.

Stephen Mason, a critical care paramedic with Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, explains: “I am a keen biker and like nothing more than getting out on the open road when I can. As a critical care paramedic with Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, I have seen first-hand the impact an incident can have on a motorcyclist. Learning practical skills to give initial help to an injured person before the emergency services arrive can be invaluable if the worst should happen.”

Emily Browne, head of education and training at Midlands Air Ambulance Charity said: "Our team responds to many incidents involving motorcyclists, and the actions taken immediately can be critical in minimising the severity of injuries and even saving lives. This course, created by bikers for bikers, gives participants the confidence to step in and assist during those crucial early moments."

The next First Biker On Scene course is scheduled for Saturday 23rd November 2024. Due to high demand, interested individuals are required to register by 31st October to secure their place. Further course dates are planned into next year.
