Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, organisers of the Walk4Life Pound the Bounds event in Rock, is urging people to sign up for its annual walking event near Kidderminster on Sunday 6th May 2018, to help raise lifesaving funds.
In 2017, the event raised over £5,000 for the charity, funding two lifesaving air ambulance missions. Walkers and runners can choose from a variety of scenic routes, from a 26-mile marathon to a three-mile family treasure trail. The event is this year proudly being sponsored by the outdoor retailer, Blacks.
Alistair Robert Keron from Pensax, experienced the lifesaving intervention of Midlands Air Ambulance Charity in 2015 when a fall on his smallholding left him with a serious head injury.
Alistair explained: “I was up a ladder trimming branches overhanging some grassland, prior to ploughing. As I cut one branch away it fell and bounced from the ground, hitting the ladder and knocking me to the ground. When I came round around five minutes later, I was unable to walk. I realised I needed to get help so I crawled to the house, which was around 200m away.”
Alistair managed to attract the attention of his wife Sue, who was horrified but remained calm when she saw the extent of his injuries.
Alistair continued: “The whole of the front of my scalp had come away from my head, so she very bravely put it back in place and covered it with a towel to stem the severe bleeding, whilst dialling 999.”
The Midlands Air Ambulance from Strensham flew Alistair to The Worcestershire Royal Hospital in just seven minutes, a journey which would have taken over 30 minutes by land.
Alistair added: “I understood later on that the travel time to hospital was greatly reduced thanks to the air ambulance. I, therefore, received treatment in the hospital much earlier than if I had travelled in a land ambulance. I am so thankful to the Midlands Air Ambulance for the care they administered and for getting me to the hospital in a quarter of the time.”
Michelle McCracken, fundraising executive for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity in Worcestershire said: “Midlands Air Ambulance Charity airlifts up to six people every day. It is thanks to funds raised by the local community and at events like Pound the Bounds, that these air ambulance missions can be undertaken.
“Pound the Bounds is a really fantastic day out for walkers, runners and young families, and a brilliant way to support a local charity.”
Registration is £6.00 for the six-mile route, and £8.00 for the nine miles, half marathon, 18 mile and marathon routes, with all profits going to Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.
